timeless, natural wedding photography at saltmarshe hall.

Some weddings just have that energy from the very beginning — the kind where everything feels effortless, everyone’s smiling before the ceremony has even started, and the whole day unfolds exactly as it should.

Liv & Chris’ wedding at Thirsk Lodge Barns was completely that kind of day.

From the sunshine and champagne tower to the most incredible golden hour and an epic champagne spray to finish the night, it was full of personality, laughter and genuinely joyful moments from start to finish.

And honestly… what a venue to bring it all to life

the wedding train of dreams

Liv looked incredible from the moment she stepped into her gown from Ava Rose Hamilton.

And that train… honestly made for some of the most beautiful movement in the photographs throughout the day.

One of my favourite things about photographing weddings naturally is being able to capture those little in-between moments — the dress catching the light, a quick glance between the two of them, everyone reacting as Liv walked into the ceremony space. Those are always the moments that end up meaning the most.

movement, space & natural moments

Thirsk Lodge Barns is one of those venues that works beautifully for couples wanting a wedding that feels both elegant and relaxed.

The barns themselves are full of warmth and character, while the surrounding grounds give you so much space for natural, candid photography without ever feeling overly staged or formal.

a day full of good vibes

What stood out most about Liv & Chris was how relaxed they were.

No overthinking, no pressure — just completely present and enjoying every second of the day with their people. That always changes the atmosphere of a wedding, and it’s exactly why the photos feel so genuine.

From the drinks reception and champagne tower to the speeches, the whole day was full of laughter and energy.

And then came the evening…

golden hour & champagne sprays

Spring weddings in Yorkshire can be so underrated, but this sunset completely showed why they deserve more attention.

As the evening light softened across the grounds at Thirsk Lodge Barns, we stepped out for a few minutes of portraits — nothing overly posed, just the two of them together in the best light of the day.

And then, of course, we finished with the most iconic champagne spray 🍾✨

Fun, chaotic and completely them.

Those are the moments I love most to photograph because they instantly transport you back to how the day actually felt.

thirsk lodge barns faq's

SThirsk Lodge Barns has some really lovely spaces for getting ready, and one of the biggest advantages is that everything happens on-site.

The prep rooms are bright, spacious and calm, with plenty of natural light — which not only makes the morning feel more relaxed, but also photographs beautifully. From a photography perspective, having soft light and enough room for everyone makes such a difference. It means those quieter moments can be captured naturally without everything feeling crowded or overly staged.

What I also love about Thirsk Lodge Barns is how easy the flow of the morning feels. You’re not travelling between locations or worrying about timings too early in the day — everyone can settle in, enjoy the atmosphere and properly soak up the excitement before the ceremony.

Thirsk Lodge Barns is located just outside the market town of Thirsk in North Yorkshire, surrounded by beautiful countryside and easily accessible from across Yorkshire and the North East.

The venue sits in a peaceful rural setting while still being convenient for guests travelling from:

  • York
  • Harrogate
  • Leeds
  • Ripon
  • Northallerton

Its countryside location gives you that relaxed Yorkshire barn wedding feel, while still being easy to reach — the perfect combination for couples wanting a wedding that feels both elegant and laid-back.

Thirsk Lodge Barns has so many lovely spots for couple portraits, which is one of the reasons it works so well for relaxed wedding photography.

The surrounding grounds and open countryside are usually the perfect place to start — especially in the softer evening light. There’s plenty of space to move naturally, which helps portraits feel effortless rather than overly posed.

The pathways and barn exteriors also work beautifully for something a little more editorial while still keeping that warm, Yorkshire countryside feel.

And then there’s golden hour… which is honestly magic at Thirsk Lodge Barns. As the sun drops across the fields, everything softens and the light becomes incredibly flattering and romantic. Usually, we’ll just step away for 10–15 minutes so you still get those dreamy evening portraits without missing too much of the party.

Absolutely — I regularly travel to Thirsk Lodge Barns for weddings and it’s always a venue I love returning to. Because I’m familiar with the venue, I know the best spots for portraits, where the light works best at different times of day, and how to keep everything feeling relaxed without pulling you away from your guests for too long.
