relaxed & elegant wedding photography

If you’re looking for proof that wedding photos don’t have to feel awkward or overly posed, Jonny and Rosie’s Hornington Manor wedding is it.

From pastel bridesmaid dresses and a huge wedding party, to a dress transformation and guests laughing their way through the day, this was a wedding that felt joyful, relaxed and completely unapologetic — and that’s exactly how it looks in the photos.

Rosie got ready in the bridal suite at Hornington Manor, and it’s one of my favourite places to photograph. The rooms are light, airy and calm, with plenty of space for a big bridal party to spread out, breathe and actually enjoy the morning.

With so many bridesmaids, there was a real buzz with music playing, dresses everywhere and lots of laughter. That energy makes such a difference to photos.

When people feel comfortable, they stop thinking about the camera and that’s when the magic happens. Rosie said one of the biggest things she noticed on the day was how quickly she stopped feeling self-conscious.

That’s always the goal.

With gentle guidance, plenty of movement and zero pressure to “pose”, Jonny and Rosie were able to relax into the day — and it shows. Their photos are full of laughter, closeness and real connection, not forced smiles.

portraits that use the architecture

If you know Hornington Manor, you’ll know the staircase. It’s ideal for:

  • Group shots with impact
  • Bridal party photos that feel grand but relaxed
  • A moment to pause before heading outside

With Jonny and Rosie’s big wedding party, this worked beautifully — full of movement, smiles and a sense of occasion without anything feeling staged.

They also choose photos in the courtyard, with the beautiful lych gate behind them — it creates a romantic, countryside feel and looks fantastic in your album.

A wedding dress with two looks

One of my favourite details of the day was Rosie’s dress transformation.

Her dress was cleverly altered after the ceremony — the sleeves were unpicked and the skirt removed — instantly changing the look from classic and elegant to lighter, freer and perfect for the rest of the day.

From a photography point of view, it felt like photographing two bridal looks in one — and it fitted Rosie’s personality perfectly.

laughter on the lawn

After the ceremony, guests spilled out onto the back lawn at Hornington Manor, which is such a brilliant space for drinks receptions.

With live singers setting the mood, glasses clinking and guests catching up, this part of the day felt effortless — and it’s always where the most natural photos happen.

People chatting, laughing mid-sentence, throwing their heads back — these are the moments couples often say matter most when they look back.

Yes — and it’s genuinely one of my all-time favourite Yorkshire wedding venues to shoot at. I love the thoughtful design details inside the house and the stunning views across the surrounding countryside. Whether you're planning a relaxed, rustic wedding or a stylish celebration with personal touches, Hornington Manor wedding photography always delivers beautiful, meaningful images.

Hornington Manor is ideal for wedding prep because it’s so spacious — both partners can get ready in separate wings of the house, with no chance of bumping into each other before the ceremony! The newly renovated getting ready rooms upstairs are full of natural light and make for beautiful, tidy backdrops in your photos.

Photography tip: Build a little buffer into your timeline so the room change isn’t rushed. It’s a great way to get clean prep shots without bags and suitcases in the background!

For couple portraits, the back lawn at Hornington Manor is a dream in any season. One direction gives you sweeping views of the Yorkshire countryside; turn the other way and you have the elegant, historic manor house as your backdrop. It’s perfect for relaxed, natural wedding photography with a real sense of place.

The back lawn at Hornington Manor is ideal as the sun begins to lower. The open space allows the light to soften naturally, creating flattering, warm tones that suit all seasons. Golden hour photos at Hornington Manor are all about movement and connection, not stiff posing.

Simple things work best: Laughing together - Walking hand-in-hand - Standing close and chatting

Planning a Yorkshire wedding? Don’t let the forecast steal your joy.

If you’re getting married in beautiful Yorkshire, you’ve probably already accepted one small truth:

The weather has a personality of its own.

As a Yorkshire wedding photographer, I can tell you this with complete honesty — some of the most emotional, romantic and atmospheric weddings I’ve ever captured have happened in the rain.

Rain doesn’t ruin a wedding day.
It transforms it.

Here’s how to make the absolute most of it.

1. Embrace It — The Romance Is Real

There is something undeniably cinematic about rain. Think windswept veils, cosy cuddles under umbrellas, reflections dancing on cobblestones.

Soft, overcast skies act like a giant natural diffuser — meaning no harsh shadows, no squinting, and beautifully even light. It’s actually a photographer’s dream.

Some of the most atmospheric wedding portraits I’ve ever captured happened between showers, under archways, or in gentle drizzle. The key? Lean into it rather than fighting it.

2. Choose a Venue That Shines in Any Weather

One of the best ways to rain-proof your wedding is choosing a venue that looks stunning inside and out.

Thankfully, here in Yorkshire, we’re spoiled for choice — from grand stately homes to cosy barns and industrial-chic spaces.

Venues like:

  • Woodlands Hotel
  • Hornington Manor
  • Middleton lodge
  • Thirsk Lodge Barns
  • Wharfedale Grange

offer gorgeous indoor backdrops, covered walkways, big windows, and dramatic architecture — so even if the heavens open, your photographs will still look incredible.

When a venue has character indoors, rain simply adds atmosphere rather than stress.

3. Have a Stylish Backup Plan (That You Secretly Love)

The best rainy-day weddings are the ones where couples already have a relaxed Plan B.

Think:

  • Beautiful indoor ceremony spaces
  • Candles and fairy lights for warm ambience
  • A statement staircase
  • Large windows for soft window-light portraits
  • Covered porches or cloisters

If you like your backup plan, you won’t feel disappointed if you need to use it.

4. Bring the Umbrellas (Trust Me on This)

Clear umbrellas are a game changer. They let light through while keeping you dry — and they photograph beautifully.

Matching umbrellas for the wedding party can also look incredibly stylish (and make for some joyful group shots).

Bonus tip: a pair of cute wellies hidden under a flowing dress? Iconic. Especially for countryside weddings.

5. Factor in 10 “Just in Case” Minutes

Rain often passes quickly. Sometimes all we need is a 10-minute dry window to step outside and create something stunning.

Building a little flexibility into your timeline allows us to:

  • Wait for drizzle to ease
  • Capture moody skies after a storm
  • Use wet ground reflections for dramatic portraits

Some of the most breathtaking images happen after the rain stops.

6. Trust Your Photographer

A huge part of rainy wedding magic comes down to experience.

I’m always watching:

  • The direction of light
  • Sheltered spots
  • Interesting textures
  • Reflections
  • Dramatic skies

Rain doesn’t limit creativity — it expands it.

Whether it’s using doorways, archways, tree cover, or creating cosy indoor portraits filled with connection, beautiful photographs are always possible.

7. Remember What Guests Will Actually Remember

Years from now, no one will say:
“Shame about the drizzle.”

They’ll remember:

  • The laughter
  • The vows
  • The dancing
  • The way you looked at each other

And often? A bit of unexpected weather adds to the story.

Some couples even tell me afterwards they’re glad it rained — because it made the day feel intimate and uniquely theirs.

A Little Rain Makes Everything Shine

OnIf you’re planning a wedding in Yorkshire and searching for a Yorkshire wedding photographer who knows how to create beautiful, natural images whatever the forecast — I’d love to hear about your plans.

Because the truth is this:

You don’t need perfect weather for perfect wedding photographs.

You just need to embrace the moment.

And if you're really worried - bury a sausage the night before and maybe bring an umbrella — just in case.
